Westover Heights Clinic has been providing sexual and women’s health care, as well as STD treatment and counseling in Portland, Oregon since 1982. Its owner Terri Warren is a renowned expert in the study of genital herpes and its treatment. She has written books on the subject and runs a successful online forum on the website where herpes patients can pay to have questions answered anonymously.
Tope Sosanya of 0101 Design had previously worked with Terri to launch the online forum and the first iteration of the website. He later approached me for help developing a custom mobile responsive WordPress theme based on a new design he created.
My goal when developing a theme is to give the user flexible options for editing the design while maintaining its integrity. One such solution involved creating a custom widget that allows the user to create cards with an icon, text excerpt and a button link. The widget also features a custom visual icon picker for dynamically updating the icon without using any code.
A custom settings page enables admin users to update the contact information and operating hours displayed throughout the website in the header, footer and contact page. This information is outputted in the theme using Schema.org markup for added SEO benefits.
